Dwight's Rating
2.6/5
  • Characters

The public has spoken and the design of Sonic changed for the better. The rest of the cast matched up perfectly and didn't disappoint. The best part of the movie was Jim Carrey's Eggman. He brings a ton of comedic timing and layers to his villainous character.

  • Reviewer's Curve

After the first design of Sonic I wasn't too thrilled about the movie. The new design really improved on things. You can definitely notice a few scenes of bad CGI since they had to change things around.

  • Plot

The plot was way too simple. It's very forgettable once you've watched it. There could have been something more memorable to it.

  • Pacing

There were rarely any points of drag. It definitely helped with the entire movie especially since the plot was kind of skimpy.

sonic

The final battle really felt lackluster. It started off slow and finished quite quickly. It didn’t allow the audience the time to root for the hero. I wish they had a longer final battle. Sonic basically sneezed on Eggman and defeated him. It even took it a step further with Marsden’s character getting another punch in before the ending. You can really tell Eggman didn’t have a chance in winning at all.

Rings, rings, rings…these things seemed a bit too powerful. You basically had unlimited teleportation abilities all movie long. I don’t mind the tool but Sonic had a ton of them which made it ridiculous. They should have limited it to maybe 10 of them were salvaged.

I might have to make this into it’s own section. Trailers!!!! Why do you show too much?! A lot of the best parts of the movie happened in the trailer.  There are very few points in the movie that didn’t pop up into the trailer at some point.

Dwight's Hypothetical Corner

Let's say I change one thing. Maybe that one thing will make the Rhythm Section better or more watchable.

Just like in Birds of Prey (2020), you don’t really feel the main villain holds up for the most part. You have instances where Eggman is a force but that happens for a quick second and it’s over. He’s more of a hindrance to the humans than to Sonic. I wish Eggman brought Sonic close to destruction a couple of times during the movie. This gives Sonic’s win at the end more weight. It shouldn’t take power from Sonic to almost defeat him. It should take different techniques from Eggman to surprise Sonic and give him a run for his money.

This might seem weird to say but adding in Sonic’s well-known friend would have been great. You have to make Eggman stronger and the best way to do so is introduce another hero for him to face. If both Sonic and Tails needed to join forces to beat Eggman than that makes him increase in power. Tails did appear in the movie but during a mid-credit scene. The ball was dropped including this friend of Sonic especially since it would increase it’s buzz.
