The American Society of Magical Negroes

Dwight's Rating
3/5
  • Characters

The cast holds their own when it comes to portraying their designated characters. Justice Smith should get another shot at a Rom-com or just a leading role. He's able to pull off the "regular guy" vibe easily enough and it would be interesting to see him in more.

  • Reviewer's Curve

At the end of the day Justice Smith was a relatable character for many Americans in this world today. The part that hurts The American Society of Magical Negroes is not having much to offer after watching the trailer.

  • Plot

The plot for The American Society of Magical Negroes is very simple and dare to say falls flat on its face. You're hoping for a bit more but it's out of reach.

  • Pacing

The pacing was quite enjoyable. You won't end up looking at your watch, wondering about how much time is left of the movie. It goes from one beat point to the next in a passable fashion.

The trailers completely ruin this movie. If you watch them then you’ve basically seen most of The American Society of Magical Negroes. That’s a huge draw back which in turn is a bigger story of the marketing team doing a poor job in promoting this movie. Less is more when it comes to trailers and unfortunately they’re off of the mark this time.

The main consequence mentioned in the trailer and movie was he couldn’t be with Lizzie character. They went on a couple of scenes about it taking away magic and Aren’s memories would be wiped so it would futile. Guess what happens… he ends up with Lizzie and no real consequence happens beside him getting kicked out of the society with his memories.

Dwight's Hypothetical Corner

Let's say I change one thing. Maybe that one thing will make this movie better or more watchable.

I would not add in all of the scenes they’ve shown throughout the trailers. Less is more for this movie with a smaller than recent average runtime. Another thing I would do is actually go through with the consequences mentioned in the trailers and the movie. It should have been included and the way how you make it happy is them meeting again at a shop and picking up their natural chemistry/ banter. The first scene with them together was pretty solid.
