Dwight's Rating
4.5/5
  • Characters

The characters seem lovable! You can tell there's some deep chemistry between all of the main characters and the side ones. There were no wasted characters and pushed the story onward, get it... wink.

  • Reviewer's Curve

I think the only thing going against this movie is the predictable ending. It's very hard to push this kind of plot without being predictable in a way. I think it's because the audience is expecting certain things to happen.

  • Plot

The plot itself is very simple. All of the plot points hit the mark and all of the tropes are there. The good thing about the plot is the additions to the normal tropes which makes it enjoyable.

  • Pacing

The pacing for Onward was pretty dope! You don't feel the run-time really. I rank it merely on the amount of times you have to check your watch or phone for the time left. There are no spaces of the run-time that is wasted at all.

onward

The ending with Ian not being able to see his father kind of sucked. It was kind of predictable since there was the falling out between him and Barley. Most of the movie they’ve hinted at the strong memories of Barley and his dad so you would think them meeting again for closure is the proper route.

I think having Ian being the magical brother was the best thing. It definitely helped with his character development. If Barley would have been the one with the powers then there wouldn’t be any need for Ian at all. You allow some connection with the boys and a little bit of training as well.

Many of the best parts of this movie didn’t show up in the trailer. This made it easier to enjoy the movie. You know some of the plot but the way how they got there was great. The best scene of the movie was close to end when they fought the dragon. You see the collaboration between Ian and his mother.

Dwight's Hypothetical Corner

Let's say I change one thing. Maybe that one thing will make the Rhythm Section better or more watchable.

Change up the normal plot device of the main characters fight so there’s some kind of tension and break up. This allows the ending to happen because both of the main characters split. Maybe have it where you input more of the cops as the foils of the main characters rather than have themselves cause the trouble.
