The Good

This movie was visually appealing. The digital team did a great job on this movie. You can see why the movie cost roughly 100 million dollars to make it.

First and foremost, the CGI on this movie was spectacular. It’s worth seeing in IMAX at the movie theaters. Visually, seeing the environment of the movie would bring you to awe.

The science behind the movie was believable. It touched on many real scenario points. Most of the things in this movie could happen when you’re in space. This movie even received praise from astronauts like Buzz Aldrin, Michael Massimino, and Garrett Reisman for its scientific accuracy.

Bullock’s character develops well in this film. You can see her use the training she received at NASA to survive all of the events she went through in space. At first her character panicked and closer to the end of the movie she became confident.

The Bad

Debris and malfunctioning equipment plays as the antagonists for Stone in this movie. Those two things played off each other too much. It presented a high level of danger in the movie. We understand the movie needs to keep you on the edge of your seat but the danger became frustrating after a while. You would think there would be some kind of counteractions for most of the space

The other crew members with the most training dropped like flies in this movie. Every moment you turn around you saw another crew member dead. Kowalski’s death was the most aggravating out of them all.

Stone is losing oxygen and begins dreaming about the return of Kowalski would piss you off. By time this event happens you think he has a small chance of surviving. Instead, you are further reminded that he’s dead and he’s there helping her remember how to power back up the shuttle. The helpful ghost of Kowalski.

DC's Hypothetical Corner

Let’s say I change one thing. Maybe that one thing will make this movie better or more watchable.

Imagine if Clooney’s character lived instead of Bullock’s character. It would give him another story to talk about while picking up ladies at the bar. It would be a different movie if the debris missed the space walk completely. They would all survive and just finish the mission. Just picture this movie with Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Dr. Ryan Stone, and Jerry Seinfeld as Matt Kowalski. Think of it as “a movie about nothing”. We could see it now, Jerry’s character decides to do some stand-up to keep Julia’s character calm. Finally to break any awkward silences you can hear him saying “What’s the deal with…”.
