The Good
Tom Cruise really shined in this movie. He showed the whole world why he’s one of the best actors in the world. It was very interesting to read that he still prefers to do his own stunts which only add to his greatness on screen.
Emily Blunt was great as Rita. She didn’t feel like a lady that needed someone to save her. She appeared to be a formidable opponent against the mimics. Rita’s training really helped Cage during his journey into becoming more than just a reporter on war.
Doug Liman did a great job on directing this film. It was a refreshing spin on the time loop process. His list of great movies shows his ability to add great action and amazing timing when a different cinematic element comes into play.
This movie was pretty funny. It had the right moments for comedic points. Many of the laughs came from Cage trying to escape from Rita so she wouldn’t shoot him to activate the “reset”.
The pacing of the film was good. You didn’t feel like the movie took too much time on certain scenes. The movie kept things going just long enough to get their desired point across.
The Bad
The ending of the movie was lacking. It could have used a better ending, something that would stack up well to the rest of the movie. Seeing Cage get the power of “resets” back in order to see the war change was a bad ending.
Easily defeated aliens made this movie feel like Avengers. You have an unstoppable army attacking and everything changes with one well placed bomb. It’s something that takes you away from the film. The idea of “resets” was a cool concept. The way how he received the power would make you second guess the competency of the mimics. They should be able to see the pass and figure out how someone else was able to control time besides their forces.
The General being able to strip Cage of his rank and throw him with the privates is a silly idea. It would be plausible if Cage wasn’t a spokesperson for the war. Anyone with a TV or radio signal would know of Cage and tricking the Commanding Sargent wouldn’t have worked.
